A Traditional Dales Pub With Rooms

Bolton Abbey is one of the most loved corners of the Yorkshire Dales. The ruins of the 12th century priory, the stepping stones across the River Wharfe and the woodland paths around the Strid draw visitors all year round. If you're planning a day out there and want a proper country pub to eat, drink and stay the night, The Middle House in Askrigg is well worth the drive.

A Scenic Route Between Two Dales

We sit on Main Street in Askrigg, right in the heart of Wensleydale. Bolton Abbey is around an hour away by car, and the journey is half the pleasure. The road over Kidstones Pass drops down into Wharfedale through Buckden, Kettlewell and Grassington, with dry stone walls, field barns and open fells on every side. Many guests use us as a base for both dales.

Food Worth Coming Back For

Our kitchen cooks traditional Yorkshire food using ingredients from suppliers we know well. Our meat comes from Hammond's of Bainbridge, and our vegetables and eggs come from Carrick's of Bedale. On the menu you might find treacle braised beef brisket, a duo of British pork or pesto salmon fillet, with starters such as Yorkshire oak smoked salmon and ham hock terrine. Do leave room for our homemade sticky toffee pudding or warm apple and bramble crumble.

Dinner is served daily from 5:30pm to 8pm, and lunch runs from 12 noon to 2pm, Friday to Sunday. Our Sunday lunch is very popular, so we recommend booking a restaurant table in advance. Tables in the bar are first come, first served, and the same menu is served in both. You'll also find a good choice of gluten free and vegan dishes.

Local Ales and a Sun Trap Garden

Our bar pours Wensleydale cask ales brewed just down the road in Leyburn, alongside a good selection of wines and spirits. On warmer days, our secluded garden catches the sun and makes a lovely spot for a pint after a long walk.

Bring the Dog Along

Muddy paws after Strid Wood? Not a problem. Well behaved dogs on a lead are welcome in our bar, front room and garden. We also have a limited number of dog friendly bedrooms, so please email us before booking to check availability.

Stay the Night in Askrigg

Rather than rushing home after a long day out, stay with us in the village made famous by the BBC's All Creatures Great and Small. We have 12 en-suite bedrooms, with a mix of twin, double and king rooms, and a full Yorkshire breakfast is included each morning. Free parking is available at the rear of the hotel on a first come, first served basis.
