Accommodation Near Fountains Abbey

Planning a visit to Fountains Abbey and looking for somewhere comfortable to stay? The Middle House sits right in the centre of Askrigg, a traditional village in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the place many people know from the BBC series All Creatures Great and Small. We are around an hour's scenic drive from the abbey, which makes us a relaxed countryside base for exploring Fountains Abbey, Ripon and the best of the Dales in one trip.

Visiting Fountains Abbey

Founded by Cistercian monks in 1132, Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved monastic ruins in England. Together with the Studley Royal Water Garden, it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site cared for by the National Trust. You can wander through the towering abbey ruins, stroll along the Georgian water garden, explore Fountains Hall and spot the deer roaming the medieval deer park.
The drive from Askrigg is part of the experience. The route takes you down Wensleydale through Leyburn and Masham, past rolling hills, stone villages and open moorland, before reaching the abbey just outside the cathedral city of Ripon.

Comfortable Rooms in the Heart of Askrigg

After a long day on your feet, come back to one of our 12 en-suite bedrooms. We have a mix of double, twin and king rooms, each decorated in a warm, country style, and many still have their original fireplaces and panelled window shutters. Every room includes tea and coffee making facilities, a TV and a bathroom with both a bath and a shower.

Our rooms are on the first and second floors, and please note we do not have a lift. There is a car park to the rear of the hotel on a first come, first served basis, with more parking at the top of the village.

Good Food and Local Ales

Every stay includes a hearty Yorkshire breakfast, served daily between 8:30am and 9:30am, with gluten free, dairy free, vegan and vegetarian options available.

In the evening, our kitchen serves traditional Yorkshire dishes using meat from Hammond's of Bainbridge and vegetables and eggs from Carrick's of Bedale. Dinner is served daily from 5:30pm to 8pm, and we recommend booking a table in the restaurant. Our bar pours Wensleydale cask ales brewed in Leyburn, and in warmer months our sun trap garden is the best spot for a pint.
