Discover Ribblehead Viaduct

Ribblehead Viaduct is an impressive feat of Victorian railway engineering and a highlight of the Settle-Carlisle railway. Designed under the direction of Midland Railway engineer John Sydney Crossley, the viaduct stretches across the open landscape with 24 stone arches, rising around 104 feet above the moor. Its construction was a remarkable undertaking. A workforce of around 2,000 navvies worked on the viaduct and the nearby Blea Moor Tunnel, with temporary settlements established around the construction site. The remains of these workers’ camps can still be found in the landscape today and are protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The project came at a significant human cost, with more than 100 workers losing their lives during construction. Today, the viaduct provides a spectacular backdrop for walks, photography and exploring the distinctive scenery of the Yorkshire Dales.
