Originally the private folly of Mr. C. R. Armstrong, The Forbidden Corner began life in 1979 as a simple windbreak of fir trees planted to shelter the stables at Tupgill Park. What started as a modest garden project grew, quite literally, into something extraordinary: a twenty-five-foot grotto, a boulder canyon, a maze, and a labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, and follies spread across four acres. After opening to the public in 1994 and weathering a fight to keep its gates open, The Forbidden Corner remains one of the Dales' most beloved andeccentric attractions, delighting visitors of all ages with its surprises around every corner.
